The treatment before production started…

”The Beamer” will be a multi-cam sitcom aimed to generate lighthearted comedy and escapism to a wide and inclusive audience. It will be in the format of a pilot episode but will feel as though watching a short film. I feel that this production could work in an episodic format or simply as a complete short film. The production will be based at a British private school where the protagonist will have a near death experience, resulting in them being able to see ghosts of the schools past. As the plot develops, the audience will see the protagonist’s character develop and the secondary characters of the ghosts helping him find his feet in the midst of A-levels and tackling the struggles of being a teenager.

“The Beamer” will have a voice over of the older protagonist telling his story in the form of a narrator, helping the audience follow the plot and giving the production team a structure to follow. The unique selling point of this sitcom is bringing supernatural elements into normal life- everything is “believable” to a certain extent. The audience are also shown the inside world of a British boarding school in the 1970s- this setting has been used by directors such as Peter Weir in the Dead Poets Society and Alexander Payne in The Holdovers, however, these films are based in the US, whereas “The Beamer” will be set in the UK which will make it niche and intriguing. The other thing which sets this production apart from other non-studio based sitcoms is that the multiple-cameras will be used to show the different perspectives of the characters (ie if they are able to see the ghosts or not.) The complex setup of this production and the fact that it uses a cast and production line of students are also selling points.

“The Beamer” will be available as a dependant short film/limited series on Netflix and other streaming services such as BBC iPlayer and Disney+.

The production will be filmed using modern equipment and then edited to feel as though filmed using 35mm, this will give the production a cosy, relatable feel and will go hand in hand with the fact that it is set in the 1970s. The colour scheme will revolve around the complementary colours of blue and orange- these colours will be used in different ratios to reflect the mood of the exact scene for example, if the protagonist is down and struggling the pallet of the scene will be a monochromatic blue. Over the course of the production as life improves, orange will start to become more prominent. The tone will be light and bubbly, easy to follow and comedic. Overall it will be a feel good comedy that will seem like a comforting classic.

Techniques used will include: a montage to show the movement of time, flashbacks, cross-cutting, manipulation of space and multiple perspectives and angles. The culture of the 70s and historical accuracy will be important, this will be highlighted in the script and score of the episodes/ short film. All of these techniques combined will build a brilliant and captivating production.
